It was the winter of 1993 and I found myself in New York City walking down 5th avenue in the cold of the season. I remember being on my way home when I passed a group of people protesting something in a most vociferous way. The group I noticed was not large but most determined to make their point of view come across to any who would listen and many who would not. It seeming disgraceful to me that this woman along with those who stood by her side would say that animals with fur had been created to be slaughtered so that people like herself (with a certain amount of money) could flaunt their wealth to those who did not have it.

I must admit, I was surprised by this which my ears were being exposed to as this woman, who repeated herself over and over; at times sounded like a deranged person who had just escaped from a mental institution. She even seeming comic in the way she ranted and raved about her cause to those about; most of which did not even take her seriously enough to stop to listen  to what she said for more than the amount of time it took them to get her point. For my part I must say however that after my initial anger were off; I took on a certain admiration for this woman and those about her.

No, I did not agree with her or any of the points she had made but I did admire her total honesty. She after all could have said something along the lines that fur coats were needed to keep people warm in winter which of course would have been completely false as even then their were artificial materials which were not only warmer but lighter than furs. She also could have resorted to other falsehoods yet was truly honest in saying that all this was about vanity and nothing else. This woman even declaring with all the gall she could muster that she did not care in the least if there were other fabrics which could be used in place of animals because all she wanted to do was slaughter animals for her pride.

Of course, I would like to make it clear that I do not agree in any way shape or form with what this woman was saying; nor do I defend her rights to kill animals just for their fur but I do admire her honesty in admitting what her intensions were. This in contrast to those people who even till this very day hunt whales supposedly for medical research though most of the meat from these whales ends up being sold in fish markets in Japan. In all this as my mind analyzed this woman’s words, I was also reminded of all those who stand on corners asking for money for food or to feed children; they do not even have. As the truth is that they simply wish to spend it on either drugs or alcohol.

I my opinion, it even gets ridiculous how far some will go or how their willing to make fools of themselves or perhaps how foolish they believe others to be when telling stories which sound as phony as that former US President who said “I smoked but didn’t inhale”. I, for my part also try to be honest about my emotions even those which I am aware will not make me popular with others or hold me higher in their esteem but quite to the contrary would lower me. This being the case with my views concerning matters such as world hunger which in all frankness; I could not care less about along with others issues which do not affect either myself or my family or my life in any direct or even indirect way.

In all this I am naturally aware of the fact that many will think negatively of me but if one thinks about it carefully; do I do evil simply by having a philosophy that says “Neither do good nor evil, neither help nor hurt anybody”? I in all this, do not see myself as doing wrong for I believe in the philosophy that the world does not wish to be saved but left alone and that charity not only begins at home but should end there as well. It being mine to help my family and friends and not go outside of that small circle of people to include those who be but strangers to me. I being honest in declaring like that woman on that cold day in New York that I would rather spend money on buying clothes for myself than sending it to help somebody who is starving somewhere in the world.

This in contrast to those who claim to want to help the world’s hungry yet spend enough money in a month on their so called “necessities” of life such as tobacco and alcohol to keep somebody alive in a third world country for just about the same period of time. In this argument, one could also include so called charity organizations which manage to spend 60% of the money their given on paying the salaries of their employees while another 30% or so is spent on  luxury offices and other such expenses. All of which leaving but 10% for those whom they claimed the money was originally for.

In conclusion, I would like to say that though I did not agree with that woman’s message or her intensions; I did appreciate her honesty in saying that all she cared about was her vanity. Of course I would not say this qualifies her as a noble character but at least one who does not hide her true intensions unlike those salesmen who claim to sell only the products they believe in though this would be impossible since they sell millions of them.
